Tech Update: Microsoft 365 makes Multi-Factor Authentication easierMicrosoft plans to enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) directly within its Outlook app that many Microsoft 365 business users use.

MFA has become a vital tool in helping you protect your online accounts from cybercriminals. As we know, MFA generates a second, single-use passcode every time you log into an enabled account. They are usually sent to an authenticator app you must download and set up before using.

Another option is for the Security Codes to be sent via SMS text message, a phone call, or a special USB key to plug into your computer. But this is also less secure and prone to issues.

The process can be made quicker using a biometric login method like fingerprint or face ID. It’s a minor inconvenience, but its additional protection far outweighs the extra seconds it takes to access your account.

Microsoft isn’t so sure about those extra seconds, however. So, if the tech giant can save you that time, it will do it. That’s why it’s looking to streamline MFA for Microsoft 365 business accounts.

It’s rolling out the improvement by building MFA directly into the Outlook app as an Authenticator Lite feature. Until now, it’s relied on a separate authenticator app or sending login codes.

There’s no news yet for those who want faster authentication on our personal PCs. However, suppose Microsoft does announce plans to make this feature available to more hardware or operating systems. In that case, we’ll update you with any news.

Suppose you don’t already use MFA for your apps and online accounts. In that case, we recommend that all businesses implement it immediately. The additional security it offers protects against most of today’s cyber threats.
