Microsoft constantly introduces new features and services to keep your people safe online and secure your data.
As a business owner or manager, you already know that weak or reused passwords are one of the most significant risks to data security in your business.
A new Microsoft Edge update, coming soon, will give you access to a new and improved password management feature. This will automatically store all your passwords within your browser, giving you a simple way to avoid most password-based cyber-attacks.
However, while this new feature is more secure than using the same login credentials across multiple applications, our advice would always be to avoid browser-based password managers in your business.
Why?
Because browser-based password managers are not flexible enough and don't give enough control back to you (as the boss), especially when a staff member leaves.
When you use a separate and dedicated password manager, you can remove someone's access to all the credentials at the push of a button. But, of course, you can also access their credential details in the case of an emergency.
You still benefit from secure encryption of the passwords, but it also works across all devices, including different browsers.
A separate password manager is typically more secure, which is essential when multiple people use your applications, each with their login details. In the case of where you can’t use separate accounts, most password managers will let you share the credentials without exposing the individual passwords themselves.
And as a bonus, your password manager will generate strong random passwords for you; remember them and auto complete the login boxes.
That means you'll have even better protection from brute force attacks, where cybercriminals try to guess your passwords.
If you don't already use a password manager in your business, it's about time you did. Given today's cybersecurity concerns, it's a simple and extra layer of data security that you shouldn't be without.
There are lots of password managers available. Would you like to know which one we currently recommend? Get in touch, and we'll discuss your options.
