Microsoft decided to retire and rework an AI tool that could recognize our facial features and identify our moods.

Azure Face is an emotion recognition tool. These were highly criticized by experts who believe they may violate human rights.

Microsoft has recently published an updated version of its Responsible AI Standard.

Microsoft also wants its AI to be a positive force in the world and says it recognizes that Azure Face has the potential to be misused.

It seems like it's not a goodbye for good for the AI facial recognition technology, however. Although it is not meant for the public to access it directly, Microsoft sees the value of controlled access for specific needs, such as assisting the visually impaired, and will consider others on a case-by-case basis.

One thing that has been eliminated is AI's ability to recognize individuals based on gender, age, hair, and even facial expression. The concern is that cybercriminals could use the feature to impersonate individuals and commit fraud.

On top of the Azure Face change, Microsoft limits businesses' access to its Custom Neural Voice service. The text-to-speech app is said to be very lifelike and compelling.

In related news, it's not the only new step that Microsoft is taking to help protect us from fraud and other threats.

It's also adding new features to its email service, Microsoft 365, that improve how something called Tenant Allow Block List operates.

Previously, this was a feature that allowed people to block contacts. If a blocked connection tried to email you, the email wouldn't reach you.

Now, Microsoft is previewing an additional control that will allow you to stop emails from being sent to these blocked contacts.

It means the opportunity of being caught by a phishing scam will be reduced, giving you another layer of security as part of your Microsoft 365 subscription.

With phishing scams becoming increasingly more effective and dangerous, it's not a moment too soon, as every little bit helps.

This new feature should go into preview soon. It is expected to be available by the end of the month and then work itself into your environment shortly. In the meantime, get in touch if you're concerned about your business's security, including email.
