Do you groan at the thought of yet another video call? I know I do.
Video calls are now a regular part of our working lives, but that doesn’t make them any more exciting.
The good news: Microsoft is introducing Metaverse-style avatars; they will be called Mesh Avatars within Teams.
You’ll be able to design your avatar, personalizing its appearance and accessories, and even choosing its reaction gestures.
Microsoft says it’s common for many to feel stressed and exhausted after spending long periods in front of a camera. So, using a virtual representation of yourself could reduce stress, and it is just one of the many applications for these new avatars.
Better yet, you won’t need an expensive virtual reality headset. Instead, it’s all done using the Avatars app in the Microsoft Teams store.
Yes, big tech is investing billions in developing the Metaverse to create a 3D virtual world that emulates the real world. You will find many things you’re already familiar with, such as shops, workplaces, and social spaces. Some predict it will become the next internet within the coming years.
It might seem wild to imagine a virtual world like this. But 20 years ago, it was hard to imagine having a mobile video call with someone on the other side of the world.
Times change and some say it is inspiring.
The new avatar feature is only available in the Teams preview versions. Still, we’ll get a general release date soon.
