Tech Update: A little trust can go a long way with staff

Countless employers still don’t trust their employees to do their work unless they’re physically in the office. But while management may be struggling to adjust to the new hybrid world, their perception is a long way from reality.

Several research studies from around the world have revealed greater flexibility from remote and hybrid working often significantly boosts productivity and creativity. Yet, some firms are bringing back an office-only policy.

As many employer’s grapple with the fallout of the last few years, they are hoping a return to the office will result in an additional post-pandemic productivity boost.

But hybrid workers have shown improved morale, greater creativity, and better collaboration (compared to pre-pandemic levels). Reversing this will be a big step in the wrong direction for many organizations.

Big Brother tactics will never be popular with the staff

Many businesses have increased employee monitoring, trying to track staff performance given the new work climate. But this is often perceived as a Big Brother tactic and ends up having the opposite effect. Resulting in lost productivity, a lack of trust in leadership, demoralized teams, and a greater feeling of ‘us and them.’

All businesses need to understand how they perform and decide which metrics give the best insight into productivity. But it has to be done in a way that doesn’t leave employees feeling like they are a cog in a machine.

So, what’s the answer?

There is some straightforward advice for building a productive and successful hybrid environment:

  • Encourage everyone to work in the best way possible as long as the work gets done and meets the goals.
  • Find the right ways to measure the results without individuals feeling like they’re constantly being watched.
  • Automate repetitive tasks to free up creativity
  • Provide everyone with the tools (and technology) they need to effectively do their job. That could include choosing suitable devices and communication tools that support collaboration and making the right connectivity choices.
